Many recent studies have indicated the abundance of anthropogenic polymers<\/strong> with a long period\u00a0of degradation across the World Ocean –<\/strong> from the Arctic to the Antarctic – located everywhere from\u00a0the surface to the bottom. Small plastic particles \u2013 microplastics – are the most environmentally\u00a0hazardous type because of their harmful impact on marine biota. However, there is currently\u00a0significant uncertainty regarding their physical properties, which may vary in time due to the\u00a0particles\u2019 biofouling or degradation, and their pathways in the sea. In order to fill this knowledge\u00a0gap, our team is conducting a research project aimed at investigation of physical characteristics\u00a0and dynamical properties of microplastic particles gathered in the water column and bottom\u00a0deposits of the Baltic Sea.\"fa3a\"<\/a> This project, entitled MicroplAstics Research in the BaLtic marine\u00a0Environment (MARBLE)<\/strong>, is funded by the Russian Science Foundation, project # 15-17- 10020.\u00a0The research team is based on the Laboratory for Marine Physics\u00a0LAMP<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0of the Atlantic Branch\u00a0atlantic.ocean.ru<\/a> of P.P.Shirshov Institute of Oceanology www.ocean.ru<\/a> of Russian\u00a0Academy of Sciences www.ras.ru<\/a>.<\/p>\n
